Phases of Cannabis growth

The growth of a cannabis plant can be divided into several key phases, each with its own unique needs, challenges, and opportunities. From the moment you plant the seed until the time you harvest the final buds, understanding these phases is crucial for achieving healthy plants and maximizing your yield.

  1. Germination
The journey starts when you introduce the seed to a suitable environment. In this phase, the seed cracks open, and the root starts to grow. The goal is to create the perfect conditions to stimulate healthy growth right from the start.
  2. Seedling
Once the seed has sprouted, the plant enters the seedling stage. During this phase, your plant is fragile and still developing its roots, leaves, and overall structure. The focus here is on giving it a stable environment to thrive.
  3. Early Vegetation
As your plant grows, it starts to establish its framework. The stem thickens, and branches begin to spread. This is when the plant is most responsive to training and nutrients, setting the foundation for the upcoming flowering phase.
  4. (Main) Vegetation
This is the phase where your plant grows the most. The focus is on maximizing leaf and branch development, as this is what will support the future buds. The plant becomes sturdier, and it’s the perfect time to apply more advanced training techniques.
  5. Late Vegetation
Just before entering the flowering phase, your plant begins to transition. At this point, you’ll notice some subtle signs of the upcoming change in growth. This phase is about fine-tuning the environment and training, preparing your plant for the next exciting stage.
  6. Pre-Flowering
As your plant approaches maturity, you’ll see the first signs of flowering. In this phase, the plant shifts focus from vegetative growth to reproductive growth, which marks the beginning of bud production.
  7. Blooming (Main Flowering)
The flowering phase is where the magic happens. This is when your plant produces the buds that you’ll eventually harvest. The key here is to ensure optimal light, temperature, and nutrient levels to encourage maximum bud growth.
  8. Ripening (Late Flowering)
During ripening, your buds will begin to mature and develop more potent cannabinoid content. Monitoring trichomes and other signs will tell you when the plant is ready for harvest.
  9. Flushing
A crucial step before harvest, flushing is when you stop feeding the plant nutrients and only water it. This ensures that any excess nutrients are removed, leading to a smoother smoking experience.
  10. Harvest
The final phase of the cannabis lifecycle is when you cut the plant, prepare it for drying, and eventually begin the curing process to maximise flavour and potency.

As you progress through each phase, you’ll encounter unique challenges and triumphs. In this guide, we’ve outlined what you need to focus on in each phase, giving you the information, tools, and tips to optimise every stage of growth. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced grower, understanding these phases is essential to achieving your best harvest yet.
