The ethics of light

Jirzankal — The Smoke at the Edge of the World

Why knowledge is safer than darkness

We do not oppose every prohibition because
we worship freedom.

We oppose blind prohibition because it often makes society stupid.

  • It teaches people not to look.
  • It confuses silence with safety.
  • It mistakes punishment for understanding.
  • It pushes knowledge into private hands.
  • It lets rumours replace evidence.
  • It makes harm harder to measure.
  • It gives the worst actors more room.

But we also reject the opposite stupidity: the idea that everything technically possible should be allowed.

No.

  • Some things should be stopped.
  • Some things should be regulated.
  • Some things should be studied without being practised.
  • Some things should be named dangerous without being turned into myth.
  • Some things require collective refusal.

The question is not whether society has boundaries.
It must.

The question is whether those boundaries
produce light or darkness.
