Mile 419.99 — The Sign They Still Wanted to Steal

Some numbers become heavier than metal

On Interstate 70 in Colorado, the Mile 420 marker was stolen repeatedly, so transportation officials replaced it with a new sign: Mile 419.99.

It was a practical fix, almost bureaucratically elegant — move the joke by one hundredth of a mile and hope the thieves lose interest.

They did not, of course.

When bureaucracy meets folklore

The story is funny because it is small, but it is also perfect cannabis folklore: a road sign becomes a relic, a number becomes a ritual, and a public object enters unofficial plant culture.

The state tried to remove 420 from the sign.

The culture simply moved one decimal place.

Factual Note

The Mile 420 marker on Interstate 70 near Stratton, Colorado, was replaced by the Colorado Department of Transportation with a “MILE 419.99” sign after repeated thefts. The sign and its replacement have been widely photographed and reported.
