Paulette: cannabis, pastry and survival

Paulette: an elderly Parisian woman, pastries, cannabis, social housing and film imagery

Age, poverty and the illegal economy on screen

Not glamour. Not empire.
Not ideology.

Survival before rebellion

In Paulette, cannabis enters through poverty, age and pastry. Paulette is not a gangster, a grower or a rebel by design. She is an elderly woman in the Paris suburbs, living alone on a pension that no longer allows her to live with dignity. When ordinary survival becomes impossible, she reads the traffic outside her building as a sign and decides to sell cannabis.

When pastry becomes contraband

But the film becomes more interesting when her old life returns.

Paulette was a pastry chef. Cannabis is therefore transformed through skill: cakes, biscuits, recipes, trade, taste and habit. The illegal market is filtered through an old woman’s craft and a lifetime of knowing how to make something people want.

What the film changes

For LIBERA HERBA, the film matters because it presents cannabis as social comedy, survival economy and forbidden ingredient.

Not glamour. Not empire.
Not ideology.

A woman with rent to pay, hands that remember pastry and

a plant standing between poverty and invention.

Factual Note

Paulette is a 2012 French comedy directed by Jérôme Enrico. Its plot follows an elderly woman in a Paris housing project who, unable to survive on her pension, begins selling cannabis and later uses her pastry skills to create cannabis-infused cakes and biscuits.
